"Awake, O north wind; and come, thou south; blow upon
my garden, that the spices thereof may flow out. Let my beloved come into his garden, and
eat his pleasant fruits."
Song of
Solomon |

My
back yard used to be a brownish patch of grass, an olive tree and some bamboo. The olive
tree is the only remaining feature, showing in the top right corner of this picture. A
large part of the garden is devoted to roses, which I choose based on scent first and
color second. I also have fruit trees: Fuji Apple, Black Mission Figs, Grapefruit, Lime,
Meyer Lemon, and Navel Orange. |
| This
path leads to a shaded spot which has become a favorite place to take a break on a warm
day. On the right is a huge rosemary that looks like a miniature tree. It's called
"Tuscan Blue", and is about 9 years old. It smells heavenly, and flavors
breads and roasted potatoes all year long. |

I
grew these Sunflowers from seed (Shepherd's Garden Seed Catalog). They are supposed to be
the kind Van Gogh used for his famous painting of sunflowers. I think they are beautiful,
but they don't last long enough. Each day they changed until they dropped all their petals
and the heads got so heavy with seed they bent over and "stared" at the ground.
I saved plenty of seed to plant many more this coming season. |
| I am not quite sure where this picture belongs...in the garden or on the
cat's page. Trouble has his favorite spot in the garden, which happens to be in this
strawberry pot. He's up above the other cats, and only one puss at a time can fit. As far
as he's concerned, Trouble is King of the Garden. |
 |
| The
garden is organic, using compost and a fertilizer made up of blue-green algae and volcanic
rock dust. I grow basil, thyme, tarragon, marjoram, mints, lemon verbena, lemon balm, aloe
vera, stevia, bay laurel, catnip, catmint, garlic, parsley, sage, and several varieties of chili
peppers (which I dry and grind into chili powder). |
| In
addition to the herbs mentioned above I grow several varieties of scented pelargoniums and
my favorite plant of all...lavender. I grow several varieties of lavender in the front
yard where the drainage is better. I'll add photos of the front garden and my
"lavender field" soon, so be sure to check back. |
